Jai Powell Lucas was born on Dec. 5, 1988 in Houston, Texas. Lucas has a strong blood line of basketball players in his family, including a father who was a 15-year NBA player and former NBA Head Coach. With this sort of support from his family, Jai Lucas was expected to achieve great things in his basketball career.
As a Bellaire High School student in Houston, Jai Lucas led his basketball team to three consecutive District 21-5A titles and was named three-time District 21-5A Player of the Year. Jai Lucas also led Bellaire to the 2006 Region III Championship as a junior, making him a shoe in for any college basketball team he wanted to play with. Jai Lucas transferred into the University of Texas Longhorns basketball program from the University of Florida. To be eligible to play on the Longhorns basketball team, Lucas needed to complete a full semester at the University of Texas.
Jai Lucas spent his first year and a half with Florida where he earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team. Lucas started all 36 games with the Florida Gators and helped lead the team to a 24-12 record, which advanced them to the MasterCard Postseason NIT semifinals. The Florida Gators beat Kentucky in the semifinals with the help of Jai Lucas, who had scored ten points and two assists.
