Dogus Balbay was born on January 21, 1989 in Kaidkoy, Istanbul. In Turkey, Dogus Balbay played with the Under-20 Turkish National Team at the 2008 Under-20 European Championships in Latvia. Balbay led his Turkey to a fourth-place finish out of the sixteen teams. The year before, Balbay also played with the Under-19 Turkish National Team at the Under-19 World Championships in Serbia, where they won seventh.
Prior to his senior year at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, he spent two years playing on the Under-18 Turkish National Team. Over his basketball career in Turkey, Dogus Balbay earned the honor of "top point guard" and named to the All-Tournament team, as well as leading Turkey to a second-place finish at the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Tournament in April 2006.
Dogus Balbay enrolled at Texas and joined the UT Longhorn’s basketball team for the 2007-08 Longhorns basketball season. Dogus Balbay has found huge success with the Longhorns basketball team and, when he returned for his sophomore year, was given the nod to play in every game but the season opener one due to a violation of amateurism rules. Dogus Balbay was ranked fourth in the Big 12 in assist-to-turnover ratio, as well as nearly recorded the second triple-double in UT history with 10 points.
